When founded in January of 1992, the original intent of the Trustees of the  Academic/Sports Youth Development Institute, Inc., (forerunner of the Kauffman Youth Development Institute, Inc.) was to support and to provide positive academic and athletic activities and programs to at-risk young Black males in both formal and informal settings. The Trustees, however, soon realized that because of the needs of other children in the community, the program should be extended to all students needing help to develop their potential .

The purpose of the Institute is to work with parents, organizations, and the existing educational systems, whether they be local, state, public, private or parochial, thereby providing a support system that encourages the use of existing facilities and programs in the surrounding area.

Goals

  • The Kauffman Youth Development Institute will strive for consistently high attendance rates. Success in school is often related to attendance.
  • A Code of Behavior will be determined by the board, administrators, teachers, parents, and staff. This Code of Behavior will stipulate standards of conduct, as well as disciplinary measures to be taken in the event of misbehavior. This code will be constantly reviewed for relevance.
  • Students and instructors will respect each other and their surroundings. A safe school environment including: classrooms, hallways, common areas, grounds or any site, used as a school site, will be imperative.
  • The Institute plans to provide an intellectually stimulating program that serves the needs of parents, community, and student's preparation to being productive workers and responsible citizens.
  • Class size will be limited in order to maximize the attention given each student. It is the intent of the Directors of the Institute to hire teacher aides to assist the teachers in providing more individual help to the students, so they can reach their highest potential.
  • Parents will be given the opportunity and responsibility to be involved in the structure and operation of their child's school.
  • The curriculum will be structured to increase students' knowledge and skills to ensure academic success.
  • The Institute will be dedicated to developing socially acceptable behavior and cultivating students who are just, trustworthy, cooperative, responsible, self motivated, courageous, and with the highest degree of integrity.
  • The Institute will be involved in the education of students in the acceptable methods of resolution of conflicts, problems, and tensions.
  • The students will excel in the academic subjects, writing, speaking, listening, logic and reasoning, and technology.
